She said “Yes!” at the top of Crystal Mountain

The sun peeked through the clouds just in time for Colten to get down on one knee and pop the question to Keri. Wow, look at her gorgeous engagement ring and radiant smile!

It was as if they were the only people on the mountain: enjoying the views and basking in the excitement of being newly engaged. Let the wedding planning begin…!

Michael & Laura at The Wild Rose

Michael & Laura “boogied on down” the aisle at the Wild Rose in Arlington. What a peaceful spot with spectacular views (those were the most incredible thunderhead clouds!)

Laura was gorgeous in her champagne satin gown – and the best part… she went barefoot!

Now THIS couple knows how to party with their friends – the classic rock tunes kept everyone hoppin’ thanks to DJ Brett of FirehouseDJ. They had it all: hula dancing, bagpipes, and Janet’s famous air guitar!

Adam & Elyse at Hidden Meadows

So many personal touches made Adam & Elyse’s day extra special: Adam’s dad presented them with an engraved wooden plaque, so they will always remember their amazing wedding day. Elyse wore beautiful pearl jewelry handmade by her mom, what a treasure!

Their family and guests came from all over the country to show their love and support – and were rewarded with the perfect Northwest summer day. Everyone was amazed at the panoramic  beauty of Hidden Meadows, especially as the sun set, casting as amber glow over the mountains. Then they danced the night away…

Birds of a Feather…Really Do Flock Together!

Hoping for an excellent birdwatching experience, we headed north to Victoria, BC. Our quiet and comfy lodging, Birds of a Feather B&B on Esquimalt Bay,  was the perfect spot to get up close and personal with dozens of species of water fowl who overwinter in the protected waters. Our room opened to sweeping views of the bay, and we took many of these images right from our private deck!

victoria blog 2a

Matt, our gracious host, outfitted us with kayaks so we could paddle on the smooth water as eagles swooped overhead and swans glided nonchalantly by. Just a few of the bird species we observed: buffleheads, pintails, scaups, and Barrow’s golden eye. It was a bird extravaganza! A curious river otter peeked out from under the dock each day, too.

victoria 1a

A short walk through the woods brought us to the grand Hatley castle, where we saw the fish ladders that James Dunsmuir had built almost a hundred years ago. As evening descended, the lights of Victoria sparkled in the distance, but who would want to leave the peace and solitude of Birds of a Feather?

Swan’s Trail Chapel – A Wedding WIth Rustic Charm

Chris & Alexa enjoyed the most beautiful weather for their September 8th wedding. The clouds were amazing, they created a vibrant sunset for the bride & groom to stroll off into. Swan’s Trail Chapel, was the perfect backdrop for their creative ideas: antique tins of all sorts were brimming with lush blooms, the Groom and his guys sported fly fishing lures as boutonnieres, and the (delicious!) cake looked like a tree branch, sitting on real log slabs. Very cool! Friends and family all lended their personal touch, even a bagpipe serenade. Of course, the adorable ringbearer and flower girl stole the show…

Sunny Day…Starry Night at Hidden Meadows

Brides and Grooms (and their entourage!) swarmed Hidden Meadows for the much anticipated Open House to enjoy fashion & food, wine & song.

We so appreciate being invited to share our passion for photography with the adorable “nearlyweds”. Hidden Meadows has felt like our second home for years now – our favorite place to capture The Moments!

Thanks to the Stocker family and staff for their tireless efforts and attention to detail. Hidden Meadows was divinely decked out!

So many talented professionals blended their skills to help couples envision their perfect wedding day – the possibilities are endless!

We even had a live fashion show! LaineeMeg Bridal (formerly From the Gown Up) transformed the lovely models into brides and bridesmaids.

Kathi’s Freelance Floral created gorgeous arrangements for the gazebo (perfect place to say “I do”) and the bridesmaids carried her sweet bouquets.

The Petal and the Stem elegantly adorned the indoor ceremony hall with red and crystal.

What’s a party without music, food and drinks?

Wave Link Music and OttoMatic kept the tunes rollin’.

Everyone devoured the creative apps, entrees and yummy desserts by Trail’s End Catering, Lisa Dupar and Cabbage Patch Restaurant. How about a mashed potato bar with all the fixin’s served in a martini glass – Debra of Chef to Go can do that for you!

Who doesn’t LOVE cupcakes? Simply Sweet Cupcakes are to die for!

Snohomish Beer and Wine made the bar a popular place to hang out. (Boundry Bay Scotch Ale gets our vote!)

Need a little (or alot) of help pulling it all together? Pink Blossom Events and Eventful Moments are there for you!

A delightful evening was had by all – happy wedding planning!

A Whirlwind Day!

The fun begins in a luxury suite at the Hyatt Olive 8. How cool to catch a ride in a Rolls Royce to the park by the Ballard Locks. Then off to Shilshole Beach Club. Everyone soaked up the sun and got a little crazy on the beach! Our gorgeous bride carried an amazing bouquet by Fena. And the table arrangements were equally spectacular. The sunset lit up the sky with pink and orange hues, and everyone wanted pictures with the last rays of light!

It’s all in the details…

Matt & Nikki celebrated their love on a beautiful Spring day at Hidden Meadows in Snohomish. All the details were in place: Woodland Flowers created lush and fragrant bouquets. Critical Sound kept the party going. And (as a surprise for the bride)British Motor Coach swept them away as sparklers twinkled in the night.

An evening to remember at Hidden Meadows

Tuesday October 11th – another elegant open house at Hidden Meadows, the most sought after wedding venue in Snohomish County. Tim & Tracy Stocker and their hardworking staff really know how to pamper their guests with beer, wine and tasty bites from some of the best caterers. To name a just a few that we sampled: Snohomish Beer & Wine Specialty Shop, Pyramid Catering, and The Cabbage Patch Restaurant.

Dozens of “Brides & Grooms-to-be” enjoyed the sights and sounds. Thanks to Wave Link DJ and Otto Matic for keeping the party rockin’! We loved the treats from Simply Sweet Cupcakes. You have to check out their Pink Champagne cupcake – delightful!

We saw gorgeous arrangements and exotic flowers by Kathi’s Freelance Floral and The Petal and The Stem

For one of a kind creations for the little ones in your bridal party, go to Beebops & Lollipops. Looking for the perfect gown? Zerlinda at From the Gown Up will help you select your dream dress and accessories. They both have charming boutiques on First Street in Snohomish!

It all comes together when you say, “I Do!”. Pat and Kent, a.k.a. A Heavenly Ceremony, have been voted “Best Officiant” more times than I can count!

It was a wonderful evening, and we were thrilled to meet so many adorable couples and their families and friends. Hope everyone had a great time planning their wedding celebration. All the best, David & Deborah Kruse, Kruse Portrait Design

Why hire a professional?

In addition to experience and many other factors, a professional photographer can deliver lasting memories in a portrait that simply cannot be achieved by “a friend with a good camera”. While we realize the economy has created difficult times, few things are as important as family and the times had together. Look carefully at the three images below. The top is not acceptable. It was taken with manual settings but no additional lighting. Something anyone can do. The second is with one light. It’s okay. The final image is with a main, fill, and background light. Very nice result. Quick to set up, but something that would only be achieved through experience and professionalism!

An Oasis in the Heart of the City

On Saturday, January 29th, we spent a lovely afternoon at The Manor, a full service wedding and event venue in Everett. Perfect for parties that flow indoors and out. The architecture has so much personality: spacious “getting ready” rooms for Brides and Grooms, plus cozy nooks for family and friends to hang out. The huge hardwood dance floor begs you to get your groove on! Outside, you are transported to another world: lush gardens complete with a pond and grotto – so romantic! You really have to see it for yourself.

We had the pleasure to be in the company of some of the best wedding professionals in the area. Chris with Wave Link Music kept the tunes spinning. They consistently provide awesome sound for both ceremony and reception - a class act!

Light – January

Of course, light is one of the most dramatic ways to affect mood in a portrait. A 30 degree grid almost directly overhead accentuates the mood in this session with Aimee!

Posted in Technique | Comments Off

Crop – December

Crop of a finished work can also impact it a great deal. This fine art print from one of our recent photo safari’s to Eastern Oregon is an excellent example. This crop gives a feel of the emptiness of the landscape and the stark setting for the old firetruck.

Perspectives – November

Change of viewpoint can dramatically separate a snapshot from a work of art. One of our favorites is the almost overhead view. Be careful not to look to straight down!

Props – October

Adding a prop can really develop the feeling of the portrait. Focus on the hat added to Remzey’s College Graduation Session!!

Seattle Bride

Thank you Seattle Bride for including us in the Spring/Summer 09 issue! The year in pictures of the favorites.

Thank you for the sensible text in the article on page 108. As all professional photographers do, we work very hard at our craft, using not just the artistry, but the technical know-how of our tools. Please, brides-to-be, don’t risk your once in a lifetime event to a friend, relative, or inexperienced photographer! It is well worth the investment to be cared for by experience.

Engagement Sessions are a blast!

We love getting up close and personal with our “nearly-weds” in a fun, relaxed and spontaneous setting.

What could be better than a photo shoot at a meaningful location: Where you met for your first date, where he proposed, or just where you like to hang out.

What are the benefits of an engagement session? So many!

No cheesy smiles!

If you or your honey are a bit camera shy, this will help you feel comfortable (maybe even a little sassy) in front of the camera. That translates into genuine, natural expressions on your Big Day.

We “get” you

Your relationship is unique! As hopeless romantics ourselves, we love to observe and capture your true selves: that sweet playful way you relate to one another. On your wedding day, we all feel like old friends.

To have and to hold

You will receive a cd generously filled with your awesome pictures, which will always remind you of this special time in your relationship. We are always amazed and inspired by the creative ways you use your engagement photos: magnets for the fridge, save the date cards, invitations, cd covers, and check out the chocolate bar!

…the best is yet to come!

Your custom designed leather bound Guest Book will be the buzz among your wedding guests. They can sign a simple signature or a fun message as they “oooh and aaah” over your romantic pictures printed on the velvet smooth stock. This is one Guest Book that won’t be shelved! You will treasure this one-of-a-kind album filled with your family and friends best wishes.

Reward yourself with an engagement photo session-it will boost your confidence and increase anticipation for your Big Day!

Flush Mount Albums

One of the coolest things a couple can take away from their wedding experience (besides a great marriage!)is a flush mount album of their wedding day!

And why not!? We offer completely custom designs(no templates!) This makes your album unique. Here is an example of a 28 page album:

The first page. A summer wedding event spanning three days! The groom from Ireland, the bride from Montana, they met in Nicaragua, and the wedding on Decatur Island in the San Juan’s!

Pages 2 and 3. What could be more important than the bride getting ready!

Pages 4-5. The groom has to get ready too! Every detail of the album is design to harmonize. We shoot details just for the preparation of an album. Note the shoe shot top left. All colors and graphic elements fit!

Pages 6-7. Do we need to say anything at all about the bride and groom session alone?!

Pages 8-9. You can see why with this location you’d want a few full spread pages!

Pages 10-11. Still more. It’s the details of every moment together that become the memories  of a lifetime!

Pages 12-13. FUNFUNFUN.

Pages 14-15. The bride and her girls. Every element of our albums is shot there. All backgrounds and details from your wedding.

Pages 16-17. The boys. Simply exudes masculinity….

Pages 18-19. The ceremony!! The driftwood arch was hand made the day before the wedding by the boys from Ireland! Nicely done.

Pages 20-21. They’re married!!! Whew, what a lot of beautiful moments!

Pages 22-23. The party begins. Selections of Northwest, Montana, and Irish delights!

Pages 24-25. The band for the reception flew in from Ireland!

Pages 26-27. We think it speaks for itself!!

Page 28. Close with the emotion of the day!!

Finally!

At last! We decided to make our first post to follow our 20th wedding anniversary.

Special times deserve special recognition. Though we have had the site up for some time now, choosing the appropriate forum to start the blog was a tough choice. What could be better than a celebration of this magnitude!

We thought we would throw in some shots taken on our trip to the Eastern Caribbean.

Hope you enjoyed these images from our trip!

Why are pictures so important?

Though we as humans have excellent memories we need an image of a past event to recall those feelings and events hidden in our minds. (Remember that song you hadn’t heard for years, then when you hear it again not only do the words come back, but also the emotions that you had tucked away in the recesses of your mind!)

Here is an example:

Lower South Falls - Silver Falls State Park Oregon
Lower South Falls – Silver Falls State Park Oregon

I can still feel the mist on my face and hear the crash of the water from this trip. While exploring some of Oregon, we visited with a couple whose wedding we had photographed. Stephanie took us to Silver Falls State Park, where we hiked the loop and shot this picture of the Lower South Falls, among many others. The memories would surely fade without the images to look back on.

For the same reasons, an artistically crafted portrait preserves your memories that may otherwise be forgotten.

Our reward is the look of delight on our client’s faces as they see the results of their experince with us, whether in a custom album or wall portrait…after all, Life is Art!

See you again soon! (Sooner this time, promise)

David & Deborah
